Captains Register Second Straight Shutout as Christopher Newport Field Hockey Takes Down Roanoke, 2-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the second time in 24 hours, the Christopher Newport field hockey team came away with a shutout victory as the Captains blanked Roanoke, 2-0, on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.

After brushing aside Centre, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon, Christopher Newport capped off a perfect weekend with another sensational effort on Sunday. Against the Maroons, the Captains surrendered only five shots and allowed just three penalty corners. Lily Kerr kicked away both of Roanoke's on-target attempts, while Abby Asuncion and Brooke Billhimer both blocked shots to keep the opposition off the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, Emma Logue deposited her team-leading seventh goal of the season just three minutes into regulation. Asuncion assisted on that strike, marking her 76th career point. That bumped her to 10th on the program's all-time scoring list, moving her past former legend Katelyn Yandle, who accumulated 75 points from 2007-10.

Later, Delaney Norr came back with the final dart off a deflection in the fourth quarter to help ice the victory.

With the triumph, Christopher Newport now stands at 9-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the setback snapped Roanoke's nine-game winning streak and dropped the Maroons to 9-3 overall.

Just moments into regulation, the Captains set the tone on both sides of the field. First, Katie Abendschoen jumped a passing lane and picked the pockets of a Maroon near midfield. Pushing the tempo, she sent the ball to Lainey Pratzner, who scurried up the left sideline to jumpstart an attack.

After Pratzner connected with Alexis Morales, the senior found Asuncion near the top of the circle. With a defender on her back, she pulled to her left and whipped a screamer towards the cage. On the inside, Norr screened the defense before going airborne to avoid the low liner. Then, on the back side, Logue settled the rocket before punching it home alongside the right pipe to open the scoring.

With a 1-0 lead, the defense took over. Early on, Morgan Arthur stoned a run along the left side of the circle, while Norr ripped possession away from a Maroon along the 25. Later in the period, Billhimer stepped up with a solid showcase. The second-year star picked off a pass at the top of the arc to cut down a push by the visitors in the middle of the quarter. Then, she came sprinting over towards the left side of the field and handled a tough hop on a long hit during a dangerous rally near the end of the stanza.

In the second period, Christopher Newport tormented Roanoke's defense with a relentless assault. Norr, Asuncion, and Morales all had early lasers turned away by the Maroons. Later, the hosts secured a seemingly endless string of corners, but the visitors continued to hang tough. The RC keeper handled three straight on-target rips, while a defender brushed aside another bullet by Marcella Sabbagh.

Although the Captains could not quite find an opening on the offensive end, the defense remained vigilant on the other side. Sabbagh clamped down on a deep run by the Maroons along the defensive 25, while Vivian Pope walled off another rally near midfield to keep the opposition scoreless entering halftime.

Following the break, Christopher Newport continued to suffocate the Maroons. Chloe Thompson cut off a surge along the right side of the arc before Pratzner added a tackle near midfield. Shortly thereafter, Abendschoen broke up a run along the defensive 25, and Arthur shrugged off a rally with a tackle along the sideline in the 34th minute.

After Abendschoen had back-to-back missiles turned away following a lethal offensive corner, the Captains went right back to work on the other side. Billhimer stonewalled a rally along the edge of the arc in the middle of the period, while Emily Evans bodied up an attacker on the left sideline before finding Morales, who quickly escorted the ball up the field and handed possession back to the attack.

Although Roanoke eventually regained control and orchestrated another surge later in the third quarter, Logue snatched an errant crosser that squirted through the circle before clearing the defensive end.

Still staring at a one-goal deficit entering the final stanza, Roanoke picked up the pressure early in the fourth. The Maroons secured back-to-back corners in the 48th minute, but the defense was up to the task. On the first attempt, Asuncion served as the flyer and blocked a shot at the top of the arc. Then, on the second try, the visitors managed to test Kerr with a pair of on-target blasts, but the freshman goalie stood tall and kept the cage clean.

Following the defensive stand, Christopher Newport added a little insurance on the offensive end. In the 52nd minute, Thompson intercepted a pass along the right sideline and immediately flipped the field. The third-year star found Asuncion, who threaded a 30-yard pass through three defenders towards the left corner.

On the receiving end, Morales grabbed possession and sliced a feed into the circle before the defense could catch up to the play. Inside the arc, Pratzner punched the roller towards Norr, who deflected the seed along the right pipe for the game's final tally.

With little left to prove, Christopher Newport polished off the shutout. Morales clamped down on a run up the left sideline before Billhimer blocked a shot with three minutes left in regulation. Later, Thompson grabbed a loose ball just outside of the circle to help quiet Roanoke's final rally of the contest.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 26-5 advantage in shots and a 14-3 lead in corners.

The Captains will return to action on Wednesday when the squad hosts No. 17 Shenandoah at 6 p.m.
