Christopher Newport Downs St. Mary’s for Fifth Straight Win

Christopher Newport unleashed a relentless attack upon St. Mary's on Wednesday night in a four set win that extended the Captains' winning streak to five.

First Set (Captains 25-15)

Four aces and eight kills saw CNU out to a 12-3 lead early in the match. Alyssa Dozier and Julia Gleason each served two aces, and Maddie Carter drove down four kills as part of the Captains' hot start. Carter finished the first set with eight kills, including one that gave the Captains set point. An errant serve from St. Mary's completed the first set and helped CNU out to a 1-0 lead.

Second Set (Captains 25-11)

Leading 16-10, the Captains took nine of the last ten points on their way to winning the second set. Kills from Macy Burk and Kyla McIntyre preceded a SMC error and an ace from Anna Dean. Dean missed on her next serve, but Kyla McIntyre quickly regained the serve for the Captains. Burk served up back-to-back aces to wrap up the second set in favor of CNU.

Third Set (St. Mary's 32-30)

The two sides matched each other point for point after the score was tied at 23. At 28-28, the Seahawks finally held serve, but couldn't capitalize on set point when an attack went wide. The Captains wouldn't fare as well the next time this happened, as a CNU service error was followed by a SMC kill to extend the match another set.

Fourth Set (Captains 25-17)

The Captains closed out the fourth and final set strong, claiming six of the final eight points of the match. Noelle Starr's ace followed a Seahawk service error, and McIntyre added two kills ahead of Alyssa Dozier's match-clinching kill that gave CNU the victory.
