NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the second time this season, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team swept the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference weekly awards as announced by the league office on Monday morning. Sophomore goalkeeper
Jaya Daniel was named Defensive Player of the Week for the third time while senior forward
Molly Beegle collected her first recognition as the C2C Offensive Player of the Week.
The Captains improved to 14-0-1 this week with a pair of 1-0 shutouts over the University of Mary Washington. The first came on Wednesday, when CNU ended the Eagles' 12-match unbeaten streak with a 1-0 win at Captains Field. Then, CNU traveled to Fredericksburg on Saturday and completed another 1-0 clean sheet against the C2C foe, running the team's win streak to 13 consecutive victories.
In goal, Daniel was terrific for all 180 minutes of action against the Eagles. She made six saves on the road and two in the home game to secure her fifth and sixth shutouts of the season. She continues to add to her program record win streak to start a career, running the total to 14 consecutive wins for CNU between the pipes.
This week, Daniel and the rest of the Captains' defense continued to add to a stalwart season with the fifth consecutive and 11th shutout of the year. The sophomore netminder has played the full ninety minutes in six of those clean sheets, including four of the last five during the team's shutout streak that has built to over 518 minutes. For the season, Daniel has allowed five goals in 1,035 minutes for a 0.43 goals-against average while making 40 saves for an .889 save percentage.
On the other end of the field, Beegle picked up her first game-winning goal of the season with a perfectly-placed strike in the 82nd minute during Wednesday night's match at home. The Norfolk, Va. native lifted the Captains to the home win with her second goal of the season.
Beegle received a pass from
Callie Birk at the top of the box before getting a touch to her right and slamming a shot off the turf and into the left pocket of the goal, beyond the outstretched arms of the diving goalkeeper. It was the fourth time this season the Captains have netted the gamewinner in the final ten minutes of the game.
Daniel and senior defender
Jill McDonald have combined to win five of a possible eight defensive player of the week honors this season while Beegle joins
Sarah Smith, a two-time winner, as offensive player of the week selections.
Christopher Newport will return to action this Saturday, October 29, as they host Salisbury University on Senior Night. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Captains Field.
