Rematch Set for No. 1 CNU Women's Soccer At Mary Washington Saturday Afternoon

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Round two is set for the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team as they travel to Mary Washington to take on the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe for the second straight game on Saturday. The Captains (13-0-1) picked up a 1-0 win on Wednesday night and will turn right around to make the return trip to Fredericksburg on Saturday for a Noon kickoff against the Eagles (8-3-4).

Senior Molly Beegle lifted the No. 1 CNU women's soccer team to the win with a goal in the 82nd minute, marking the fourth time this season the Captains have scored the winner in the final ten minutes. The thrilling finish included another stalwart defensive effort as CNU held a Mary Washington attack that had scored multiple goals in four straight games empty for just the third time in the last 13 games.

CNU will carry the nation's longest active unbeaten streak into Saturday's game, which is currently at 37 consecutive games without a loss. The win on Wednesday was the 12th straight for the Captains as CNU improved to 35-0-2 in two seasons under head coach Jamie Gunderson

Four of the last five games in the series against Mary Washington have been decided by one goal or less. For fans unable to attend the game in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available courtesy of the Mary Washington Department of Athletics. The Captains' resilience has been at the forefront through the middle portion of the 2022 schedule as the team works through several injuries to impact players. Despite missing key contributors at times, the CNU roster continues to fill in, showcasing the team's depth at every position. Fourteen different players have registered at least four strats this season and another has three starts this year; the Captains' constant rotation has provided a difficult challenge for opponents all season long.

Defensively, CNU continues to feature one of the most dominant back lines in all of Division III soccer. For the fifth consecutive season, the Captains have logged a shutout streak of four games or more during the year. Re Slater, Jill McDonald, Kate Eissenberg, and Sarah Rhiel have seen the most work on the back line lately, with Nyah Savage and Ellie Cox serving as key cogs to the success of the defense as well.

Mary Washington features an opportunistic offense that is averaging nearly two goals per game this season. Sisters Kristina and Kaitlyn Venzen have provided a spark to the offense as freshmen while senior Amanda Krest leads the way with 18 points on seven goals and four assists. In goal, senior Ally Holden has a 0.62 goals-against average and an .810 save percentage in 14 starts this season, logging five shutouts.

Following Saturday's matchup with Mary Washington, CNU will return home for the regular season finale next Saturday, October 29, as they host Salisbury on Senior Night. The Captains will then host the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship the following week.
