COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Following her historic showcase during the Christopher Newport field hockey team's 2-0 victory over No. 13 Shenandoah, Lily Kerr has been named the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week, which was announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Wednesday afternoon.

Making some history with her honor, Kerr became the first freshman goalie in the country to earn the national award in two years. Meanwhile, she is just the third Captain to receive the recognition in program history, joining current teammate Marcella Sabbagh (September 11, 2019) and former legend Stephanie McKinney (October 4, 2017).

Previously, Kerr was selected as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Stockpiling awards for her efforts, Kerr was a dominant presence between the pipes during Christopher Newport's 2-0 win over No. 13 Shenandoah. Against the nationally-ranked Hornets, she registered 13 saves, which equaled the fourth-highest total by a freshman in school history and the most by a first-year competitor since 2003.

In addition to placing her on the program's all-time freshman charts, Kerr's 13 saves also marked the second-highest total in a shutout victory in school history, trailing only Brittany Bradsher's 14 stops in a 1-0 triumph over No. 15 Lynchburg on September 18, 2010.

Clamping down on the high-powered Hornet attack, Kerr starred throughout the 60-minute battle. She kicked off the contest with four saves in the opening quarter, including a pair of sliding tackles to kill off breakaway rallies in the early going. Later, she came back with five more stops in the second stanza. Her finest moment came in the 25th minute when she stoned a pointblank rip with a diving save along the left post before handling the follow-up attempt just seconds later.

Polishing off her award-winning showcase, the Annapolis, Maryland native came back with four more saves in the second half, including three during a rapid-fire assault following a penalty corner during a third-quarter surge.

Making her performance even more impressive, Kerr's dominance came against the nation's top-ranked scoring offense. Entering last week, Shenandoah led the nation with a 6.08 goals-per-game average and had not been shut out in 42 consecutive games.

Her work against the Hornets headlined an incredible 213-minute scoreless streak dating back to October 2. That marked the fourth-longest run by a freshman in school history. Coupled with her blankings against Centre and Roanoke earlier this month, Kerr became the first Captain to notch three consecutive complete game shutouts since Elexa Nosonchuk accomplished the feat in 2007.

Overall this year, Kerr ranks second in the nation with a 0.32 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage. She has also helped Christopher Newport collect eight shutouts this season, which is tied for the fifth-highest total in the NCAA.

Kerr and the rest of her teammates will return to action on Friday at noon when the Captains square off with Rhodes in Memphis, Tennessee.
