FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After leading the Christopher Newport field hockey team to a pair of shutout victories over the weekend,
Abby Asuncion and
Marcella Sabbagh swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for their starring efforts during the two games.
The Defensive Player of the Week award is the second of the season for Sabbagh after she was previously celebrated on September 26. Overall, she now has five weekly awards in her career, which equals former legend Bailey Lien for the most in school history.
Meanwhile, Asuncion was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in her career. That ties former All-American Rachael Allshouse for the most offensive awards by a Captain.
Headlining the squad's defensive efforts, Sabbagh helped Christopher Newport post back-to-back shutouts. During the two contests, she played all 120 minutes while helping limit the opposition to a combined eight total shots and four corners.
On Saturday in a 4-0 triumph over Centre, Sabbagh handled two of the Colonels' three shots during the game. Following a penalty corner in the fourth quarter, the senior registered her 13th career defensive save before deflecting a follow-up attempt just moments later. Meanwhile, she also landed the game-winning goal on the other end after converting her fourth penalty stroke of the year in the 27th minute.
Less than 24 hours later, Sabbagh continued her impressive work during a 2-0 victory over Roanoke. Against the Maroons, she helped the Captains surrender only five total shots, including a pair of on-target rips. The Lewes, Delaware native also remained a centerpiece on the penalty corner defense, which brushed aside all three of Roanoke's attempts.
On the other side of the field, Asuncion lit up the competition with a relentless assault. Against Centre, she posted a season-high five points while contributing her second multi-goal effort of the year. Her final tally marked the 33rd of her career, moving her into a tie for sixth-place on the school's all-time goals list.
Continuing her work on Sunday, Asuncion assisted on the game-winning tally against Roanoke. Additionally, she jump-started the rally that led to the squad's second strike after threading a 30-yard feed through three defenders in the fourth quarter. Equally effective on the defensive end, the Sterling, Virginia native also blocked a shot on a corner attempt in the final stanza.
Aided by her six points during the week, Asuncion bumped her career total to 76. That stands as the 10th-highest in program history.
Overall this season, Sabbagh ranks second on the team with 711 minutes of action while anchoring a unit that ranks eighth in the NCAA in scoring defense. Meanwhile, Asuncion is tied for the team-lead with 18 points while boasting six goals and six assists.
Sabbagh, Asuncion, and the rest of the Captains will return to action on Wednesday when Christopher Newport hosts No. 17 Shenandoah at 6 p.m.
