Captains Come Up Short, Fall in Five Setter to Randolph-Macon

Christopher Newport Volleyball's win streak came to an end on Thursday night. After a hard-fought, five-set match, Randolph-Macon inched past the Captains and won 3-2 in a match that was decided by just a few points.

First Set (Captains 25-17)

Christopher Newport grabbed control of the match early with an impressive attack in the first set. Maddie Carter and Mackenzie Wright each had four kills as part of the 16-kill effort of the Captains. Two separate 4-0 stretches helped propel CNU out in front, while their impressive hitting percentage of .250 kept the Yellow Jackets at bay. Carter drove home the final kill of the first set to put CNU ahead early.

Second Set (Yellow Jackets 25-20)

After hitting .094 to open the match, Randolph-Macon recovered its attack in a big way, hitting .324 in the second set. Christopher Newport fell behind early as RMC jumped out to a 6-2 lead. A CNU run was capped off by an Anna Dean ace that put the Captains ahead 13-12, and the two sides stayed within a point or two for most of the set. The Yellow Jackets were out in front 22-19 after two CNU errors when they made a service error that could've swung the momentum for CNU. But the Captains couldn't take advantage and RMC took the next three points and the second set.

Third Set (Yellow Jackets 25-16)

The two sides stayed close for the early part of the third set, but 11 attacking errors proved costly for the Captains. With a 14-13 lead, the Yellow Jackets rolled off a 7-1 run that gave them a commanding 21-14 lead. Macy Burk and Anna Dean each picked up kills while trying to help CNU mount a comeback, but RMC's Grace Parker collected two more kills to finish off the third set for the Yellow Jackets.

Fourth Set (Captains 25-16)

The Captains cleaned up their attack in the fourth set with 16 kills on only three errors. Teamwork was the name of the game as five different CNU players registered a kill in the set's first 13 points. Christopher Newport twice scored five points in-a-row to help build a large lead. One of these runs included two service aces and three assists from Sammy Carroll, who also delivered the set-clinching kill to force a deciding fifth set.

Fifth Set (Yellow Jackets 17-15)

Randolph-Macon jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fifth set, so CNU had no time to waste if they wanted to comeback. The Captains answered the call and rallied back with a 9-1 run that put them ahead 11-6. RMC then responded by scoring six of the next seven to tie the set at 12. Two kills for Mackenzie Wright helped balance out two errors by CNU, but the Yellow Jackets prevailed with two kills from Parker and a CNU error allowed them to take the set and the match.
