Christopher Newport Sweeps Saturday in Lexington

Christopher Newport Volleyball will return home happy after two wins on Saturday in Lexington, Va. The Captains topped Shenandoah and Washington & Lee by a combined 6-1 margin.

Christopher Newport 3, Shenandoah 0 | (25-14, 25-19, 25-15)

First Set

The Captains quickly jumped out in front with an impressive first-set victory. Maddie Carter finished the first set with seven kills and CNU totaled five aces in an 11 point win. Though they never trailed in the first set, Christopher Newport couldn't feel comfortable early in the set. But with a 17-13 lead, CNU scored eight of the next nine points to close out the set. Anna Dean served two aces before Maddie Carter drove home the final kill of the first set.

Second Set

CNU picked up where they left off in the first set and scored the first four points of the set. The first kill of the set came from Hanna Nelson, who finished the second set with four kills, tied for the CNU lead. Anna Dean added four aces as part of a 7-0 run for the Captains that put them ahead 18-8. Christopher Newport looked close to closing out the set, leading 23-13, but Shenandoah scored six of the next seven to get within striking distance. It wasn't enough to overtake CNU, as they wrapped up a 25-19 win.

Third Set

Christopher Newport took an early 4-1 lead by scoring three points in-a-row, and never allowed Shenandoah the chance to get back into it. With back-to-back aces from Noelle Starr as part of a 5-0 run, they put together three, 3-0 runs. CNU led 23-15 before an opposing attack error set up match point. On match point, Olivia Smalls drove her fourth kill of the set to clinch the first win of the day for the Captains.

Christopher Newport 3, Washington & Lee 1 | (20-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21)

First Set

The Captains started slow in their second match of the day. Though CNU briefly held a one-point lead, the Generals led most of the first set. In their only set with double-digit attacking errors, CNU was unable to overcome their errors despite drawing within three late in the set. Trailing 23-20, a service error and an attacking error gave the first set to Washington & Lee.

Second Set

Christopher Newport cut their errors in half in a second set that looked very different from the first. An early 5-0 run helped the Captains establish a lead, but it was the 8-0 run that helped CNU finish off the set. Rebecca Frey's two aces played a part in the run that also included two kills for both Kyla McIntyre and Hanna Nelson. The Captains had doubled up the Generals and led 24-12 on their way to easily taking the second set.

Third Set

The Captains posted their best hitting percentage of the match in the third set with an impressive .481. Maddie Carter posted five kills and Mackenzie Wright added four more as CNU jumped out to a 9-3 lead. Christopher Newport led the entire set as Washington & Lee hit in the negative and was never able to match the Captains' strong attack. Carter's fifth kill won the set for CNU as they took the match lead, 2-1.

Fourth Set

In the closest set of the night, the Captains and Generals went nearly point-for-point down the stretch. After each side put together a run in the early part of the set, they found themselves all squared at 20-20. CNU took the opportunity to win the set and match at that point, taking five of the next six points. A service ace from Sammy Carroll followed a W&L attacking error to put CNU up two. The Generals managed to get one point back before Maddie Carter's kill returned the serve to the Captains. A General attacking error was promptly followed by Kyla McIntyre's third kill that won the set for Christopher Newport.
