Captains Stifle Seahawks in Weeknight Win

Christopher Newport Volleyball held St. Mary's to just 31 points on Wednesday night as they took down the Seahawks, 3-1. The Captains shut down the St. Mary's attack as only two players finished the match with more than two kills.

First Set (Captains 25-17)

St. Mary's grabbed an early lead to start the match from some CNU errors. The Captains would soon round into form with Maddie Carter and Mackenzie Wright providing the power. The pair combined for nine kills in the first set and helped CNU rally back and take the lead. A 6-0 swing put the Captains out in front by seven before Hanna Nelson and Kyla McIntyre put the finishing touches on CNU's comeback in the first set.

Second Set (Captains 25-7)

The Captains picked up in the second set right where they left off in the first set. After the score was tied 4-4, CNU went on a tear, scoring 21 of the next 24 points, including the final 11 in-a-row. They did this with an efficient and effective attack, totaling nine kills on 19 attacks. CNU also served six aces in the second set, with four from Anna Dean.

Third Set (Seahawks 25-22)

In the closest set of the night, Christopher Newport claimed an early lead at the jump. A couple of service errors allowed St. Mary's to stay close as the two sides went point-for-point through the first 20 points. Each side was able to hold their respective serves and put together scoring runs. CNU's 6-0 run included two kills from Anna Dean, but St. Mary's 9-1 run put them ahead 23-17. Olivia Smalls served two aces in a 5-1 swing for the Captains, but they wouldn't complete the comeback this time as the Seahawks took the third set.

Fourth Set (Captains 25-10)

Christopher Newport remedied any third-set issues and regained all of the momentum in the fourth set. CNU won the fourth set with 12 kills, five aces, and three blocks. After starting the set on a 7-2 run, they soon rolled off six straight points, including three straight aces from Dean. The Captains pulled away even further when Hanna Nelson contributed three kills in a four-point run. The set and match ended on a Seahawk service error as CNU closed out the match a 15-point set win.
