Captains Rally to Win Five-Set Thriller over Mary Washington

Trailing 2-0, Christopher Newport Volleyball pulled off a spectacular comeback by winning the next three sets and taking down Mary Washington 3-2 on Tuesday night. Maddie Carter (18) and Kyla McIntyre (11) each finished with double-digit kills in the Captains' second five-set win of the season. With the win, Christopher Newport has now won 10 straight matches.

First Set (Eagles 25-16)

Mary Washington's precise attacking was the difference in the first set. The Eagles hit .300 while CNU hit .026, the lowest the Captains hit in any set during the match. Mary Washington took the lead early and after a 10-4 run, managed to close out the first set by a wide margin.

Second Set (Eagles 25-23)

The Captains weathered an early run that saw Mary Washington sprint out to an 11-3 lead. CNU was able to fight back with a four-point run started by a Kyla McIntyre kill and a Noelle Starr ace. Trailing 23-18, kills from McIntyre and Rebecca Frey bookended a Julia Gleason ace and brought the Captains within two, but the Eagles finished off the set with two kills to take a 2-0 match lead.

Third Set (Captains 25-15)

With their backs against the wall, the Captains had some work to do to even extend the match beyond three sets. Facing an early 5-2 deficit, CNU turned things around quickly with a 5-0 run and took the set lead. After losing the lead, Mary Washington struggled to put together a consistent attack, hitting -.037 in the third set. With Eagle errors helping CNU build a five point lead, the Captains scored the next six points in a row. Anna Dean served up an ace and a kill during the run that put CNU out to a 24-13 lead, and ultimately, led to a set win.

Fourth Set (Captains 25-11)

The Captains capitalized on their momentum from the third set and surged out to score the first nine points of the fourth set. Maddie Carter had three kills in that span along with a few attacking errors by the Eagles. The Captains were completely locked in for the fourth set with 13 kills, three blocks, and three service aces. On the other hand, UMW could only muster three kills as they quickly fell behind and never recovered. Maddie Carter delivered the final kill in a dominant fourth set win for Christopher Newport, forcing a deciding fifth set.

Fifth Set (Captains 15-10)

Mary Washington took the first point, but kills from Anna Dean, Maddie Carter, and Mackenzie Wright put CNU ahead 3-1. After the Eagles tied it, Carter and Sammy Carroll registered kills before Wright's service ace one again established a three point lead. After some back-and-forth, CNU put together another 3 point run that included an ace from Julia Gleason and took a 13-7 lead. Kills from Dean and Carter completed the comeback and sealed the win for Christopher Newport.
