The Captains were last in action on September 18 when the squad dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to No. 2 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field. During that battle,
Mauri Ware drove home a pair of goals and became just the third player in program history to register at least two strikes against a top-five foe. Meanwhile,
Chloe Thompson also added her first collegiate tally with a dart in the third quarter.
With her strike, Thompson became just the fifth Captain in program history to record her first career goal against an opponent ranked in the top-five. Incidentally, three of the other players to accomplish that feat are on the 2021 roster. During the 2019 campaign, Ware posted her first goal against No. 4 Messiah,
Abby Asuncion struck first against No. 5 Johns Hopkins, and
Nyla Lewis did it against No. 3 Salisbury.
Former Captain Lindsay Kelly was the first player to accomplish that feat after depositing her first goal against No. 1 Salisbury in 2005.
Overall this season, nine different Captains have scored at least once, including Asuncion, who has a conference-high nine tallies. Ware also ranks third in the league with five goals, while
Marcella Sabbagh and
Vivian Pope are tied for third with three assists.
Defensively,
Gabi Gray has 20 saves and a 2.25 goals-against-average. The junior goalie has yet to allow a goal at home this season after piecing together a 60-minute shutout against Catholic on September 15 and a 45-minute masterpiece against Bridgewater on September 1. Her six stops against Johns Hopkins on Sunday also established a new career-high.
St. Mary's (Md.) comes to town after dropping a 3-2 decision to Mary Washington on Wednesday. Sophie Carlson led the Seahawks with three points, including her first goal of the season after converting a penalty stroke in the first minute of action. Meanwhile, Maddie Mayuga also scored against the Eagles, while Meaghan Collins chipped in with four saves.
So far this season, Celina Kaufman leads St. Mary's (Md.) with eight points, including four goals. Hayden Kesner also has three strikes and an assist. On the defensive side, Collins sports a 2.14 goals-against-average and a .634 save percentage. Charlotte Horn and Erika Schutt have tallied defensive saves as well.
In 17 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 15-2 edge in the series. The Captains have won 11 straight battles since 2007, including a 2-1 triumph in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament in 2019. During the most recent match-up, Asuncion had three points against the Seahawks, and Sabbagh added an assist.
Following Saturday's tilt, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a showdown with Concordia (Wisc.) on October 2.
