Christopher Newport Volleyball Aces 19 Serves in Sweep of Eastern Mennonite

Christopher Newport Volleyball served up 19 aces, the most since 2014, in a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday night. Six different Captains contributed to the 19 ace effort, including Anna Dean, who led the way with six service aces.

First Set (Captains 25-18)

Three aces from Noelle Starr kick started a CNU run that proved to be the difference in the first set. With the score at 7-7, Starr rolled off three straight service aces that were followed by two more points for CNU and a five point lead. From that point on, the Captains never relinquished that lead. With a 20-18 advantage, Sammy Carroll's kill earned CNU and Julia Gleason the serve. With two kills from Anna Dean, and Gleason's second and third service aces of the set, the Captains closed out the first set with the match lead in hand.

Second Set (Captains 25-19)

An EMU service error gave the first point to CNU, and then Macy Burk served up an ace for her first point of the second set. She contributed 5.5 points this set, three from kills, two from service aces, and another half on a block with Kyla McIntyre. CNU never trailed in the second set as two separate 4-0 runs helped the Captains get out to a healthy lead. Maddie Carter helped keep the Royals trailing with four kills in the set, including the one that ended the set and gave CNU a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Third Set (Captains 25-17)

Just like in the second set, the Captains led wire-to-wire on their way to a dominant set and match victory. Anna Dean started the set with the serve and scored three of the first four points on aces, but she didn't stop there. The sophomore served up three more aces later in the set as part of a 7-2 CNU run that put them in front, 19-12. Maddie Carter contributed four more kills, and Kyla McIntyre put the exclamation point on the match with her sixth kill of the night to win the set and the match.

News & Notes

  • Mackenzie Wright (10) and Maddie Carter (9) led the Captains in kills tonight, and only committed one error between the two of them, hitting a combined .500.
  • Julia Gleason's four aces and four total points were both career bests for the sophomore.
  • Along with her six aces, Anna Dean led the Captains in scoring tonight with five kills and a block assist to total 11.5.
