ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Taking on a field of opponents at the Joe Hunt Invitational hosted by the Naval Academy, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team has faced a bevy of competition from NCAA Division I this weekend. The Captains have taken on opponents from Navy, the University of Richmond, Saint Bonaventure University, and Fairleigh Dickinson University over the course of the first two days of the event.
With plenty of action on tap in Annapolis, the Captains have earned a number of victories over Division I competition. On the first day,
Dawson Driscoll and
Mason Kolls grabbed a 6-3 doubles win over the Young/Nguyen pairing from St. Bonaventure. Driscoll also picked up a singles victory over FDU's Taiga Koyama (4-6, 7-5, 10-3) on Friday to lead the way for CNU in the opening day's action.
On Saturday,
Matthew Dubuque and
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen paired up for the lone CNU doubles win on the day, dropping Schneideman/Marrero (SBU) by default. In singles action, Driscoll continued his strong performance with another win over the Bonnies' Ethan Nguyen (6-1, 6-3), highlighting a group of four CNU wins in individual play. Porsmyr Hansen notched a straight-set win against Bonaventure's Marco Rivolo (7-5, 6-4) and teammates
Theodor Risebrobakken and
Mason Kolls each also gathered one win apiece. Risebrobakken downed Niclas Pietsch (FDU) by a final score of 7-6, 6-2 and Kolls outlasted Luke Young (SBU) by a count of 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.
