Live Stats

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport field hockey team will face its second home test of the season on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when the Captains host Catholic in a non-conference battle at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport currently sits at 2-3 on the season, including 1-0 at home. Meanwhile, Catholic is 1-3 overall and 0-2 on the road.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are coming off of a 4-1 win over Roanoke on Sunday. During that contest, Christopher Newport erupted for three goals in the second quarter before cruising to the victory. During the first-half surge, Katie Abendschoen deposited her third strike of the season to kick off the scoring in the 18th minute before Logan Beal and Mauri Ware added daggers during a three-minute blitz just before halftime. Later, Lainey Pratzner deflected a rope off the stick of Maddison Steele to punctuate the triumph in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, on the defensive side, the Captains allowed only six total shots against Roanoke. Picking up the win between the pipes, Gabi Gray stoned three of the Maroons' four on-target rips during a 60-minute showcase.

So far this season, Christopher Newport has displayed a well-rounded offensive attack with 10 different players registering at least one point and seven Captains finding the back of the cage. Of the squad's goal-scorers this season, Abendschoen, Beal, Pratzner, and Steele have all connected on their first collegiate strikes during the team's first five games. Meanwhile, Vivian Pope also added her first career assist in the opener and has continued to make plays all over the turf during her junior campaign.

On the other side of the field, Catholic has faced a brutal stretch of games with three showdowns against top-15 opponents during the first two weeks of the season. The Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 6 TCNJ in the opener before suffering a pair of 5-1 setbacks against No. 9 Rowan and No. 15 Ursinus. Sandwiched between the nationally-ranked competition, the squad toppled Randolph-Macon, 2-1, on September 8.

During the first four games, Katie Cusumano leads the team with three goals, including one in each of the showdowns with top-15 foes. Katie Murphy also has a pair of tallies, while Molly McEvoy has handed out a team-high three assists. Defensively, Maysen Elliott has a .594 save percentage and 3.25 goals-against-average. Meanwhile, Gracie Burford has a pair of defensive saves after making two clutch stops against ninth-ranked Rowan on September 4.

In 16 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 10-6 edge in the series, including a 2-1 triumph during the last battle in 2018.

Following Wednesday's contest, the Captains will return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. when the squad travels to Baltimore for a match-up with No. 2 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field.
