Captains Drop Season Opener to Virginia Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, VA. - The Christopher Newport Volleyball team fell in the season's first match, 3-1, against Virginia Wesleyan.

CNU took the first set 25-20 behind four kills from Kyla McIntyre and two service aces from Macy Burk. The scoring stayed even throughout the set, but the Captains found their stroke at the end of the set. With the score 21-19, CNU scored four of the last five points to close out the first set and take an early 1-0 lead.

The second set started similar to the first, with the teams staying even for most of the set. Mackenzie Wright registered three kills as the Captains looked to close out the second much like the first. But it would be the Marlins with a late rally in this set, closing it out on a 7-2 run to even the set score at one.

The Captains fell behind early in the third set, trailing 5-1. But after taking a timeout, CNU reemerged with the right plan and rolled off five straight points to take a 6-5 lead. Despite the momentum gained in that run, the Captains had a hard time sustaining rallies. Nine service errors plagued CNU as the Marlins claimed the third set with four of the last five points to win, 25-21, and take a 2-1 lead.

VWU jumped out to a 8-4 lead early in the fourth set, but after another well-timed timeout, the Captains rebounded and kept within striking distance of the Marlins. Trailing 23-20, CNU evened the score with four straight points. At set point, a service error allowed VWU even the score at 24. Mackenzie Wright came through with her 13th kill of the match to bring the Captains to their second set point, but VWU posted three straight kills to take the set and the match.

Wright came one klll shy of her career high with 13 on the night while senior Maddie Carter matched her own career best, adding seven kills to CNU's effort. Newcomer Kyla McIntyre turned in a strong showing in her collegiate debut with 11 kills. Also in her collegiate debut, freshman Noelle Starr led the team with 11 digs. Sammy Carroll contributed 40 assists along with 8 digs and two kills.

Christopher Newport will return home this weekend for four matches in the Freeman Center at the Captains Classic. Cabrini, Susquehanna, Clarkson, and Illinois Wesleyan will be in town for the weekend. CNU opens with Cabrini on Friday, Sept. 3 at 3:00pm.
