Captains Sweep First Day of Captains Classic

Carroll's Record-Breaking Performance Leads Captains to Gutty Win over Susquehanna

On the first day of the 2021 Captains Classic, the Christopher Newport Volleyball team set out to defend its home court. As it turned out, they were more than up to the task. The Captains swept Cabrini in the first match, and battled for a hard-fought, five-set win over Susquehanna in their second match.

Christopher Newport 3, Cabrini 0 | (25-23, 25-14, 25-18)

First Set

The Cavaliers scored five straight points early in this one and forced a CNU timeout after taking a 5-2 lead. Following the timeout, CNU righted the ship and never looked back. With the score even at 23, Sammy Carroll served an ace to bring the Captains to set point. Carroll then set up Mackenzie Wright to drive home the set-winning kill and seal an early 1-0 lead.

Second Set

The Captains started off the second set with 8 straight points. The domination continued as they expanded their lead out to 15-3. Macy Burk hammered home the 25th point as CNU cruised to a second set win without facing much resistance.

Third Set

A service error from the Cavaliers started off the third set, and Cassie McShaffrey held serve for the next six points in a row to help CNU out to a 7-0 lead. Cabrini narrowed the gap with a run of their own to get within two, but they could never fully mount a comeback. Anna Dean closed out the set and the match with her first kill of the day.

Christopher Newport 3, Susquehanna 2 | (27-25, 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-9)

First Set

From the very beginning of this match, it was clear that the teams were evenly matched. The two squads stayed close, each trading leads throughout the first set. The Captains looked to wrap up the set, leading 23-20 but Susquehanna took advantage of a few errant attacks to even the score at 23. The two sides went point-for-point until Macy Burk and Sammy Carroll drove home back-to-back kills to earn the first set for CNU, 27-25.

Second Set

Just like in the first set, the two sides traded blows for the early part of the second set. But midway through, Susquehanna's Rosina Esposito took control, rolling off five straight kills as part of a 7-0 run. Espositio finished the second set with seven kills as the River Hawks took full advantage of this run, wrapping up the second set 25-19, evening the match score.

Third Set

The margin for error remained razor thin in the third set. Neither side led by more than four for the entire set. Burk and Wright continued to anchor the Captains on the attacking front, each registering four kills in the third set. With the teams all squared at 22, Susquehanna scored 3 of the next 4 points to take the set and move out to a 2-1 lead in the match.

Fourth Set

The fourth set saw Christopher Newport come together and fire on all cylinders. The Captains opened the pivotal set on an 11-4 run, and the rout was on. Six different Captains registered a kill as Sammy Carroll racked up 12 of her 60 assists. At one time doubling up the River Hawks 20-10, CNU made short work of Susquehanna in the fourth set and forced a tie-breaking fifth set.

Fifth Set

The Captains were able to carry the momentum from a dominant fourth set into the fifth. Maddie Carter kills accounted for the Captains first three points, and Carter combined with Mackenzie Wright to put away eight kills in the fifth set. CNU jumped out to a 10-5 lead, and held off the River Hawks and wrapped up a 15-9 set win, and more importantly, a five set victory.

News & Notes

  • Sammy Carroll had 60 assists in the win over Susquehanna. That's the most assists in a match in Freeman Center history the most since the record was set at 58 in 2010 (Jessie Heavenrich vs. Eastern on November 13, 2010).
  • Carroll's 60 assists is also the sixth highest total in program history and she is just the fifth player to reach the 60-assist plateau, and the second most in the current scoring format of rally scoring to 25 points (Rachel Conway had 62 vs Emory on September 25, 2015).
  • Senior Maddie Carter continues to improve her career-best kills total. She came into the season with a mark of seven, which she matched on Wednesday. Against Cabrini, she upped her career-best to 12, and raised it again against Susquehanna, leading the team with 17.
  • Freshman Noelle Starr totaled of 26 against Susquehanna, the best mark of her young career
  • The Captains' sweep of Cabrini is their first 3 set win since the CAC Semifinal on Nov 7, 2019 against Southern Virginia.
