FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Men's Tennis teams were announced on Friday afternoon, listing three Christopher Newport Captains among the honored players. Senior
Scotty Hunter was selected as a first team singles player while
Alec Strause and
Ryan Macy each hauled in first team doubles accolades.
The Christopher Newport contingent joins Mary Washington & Southern Virginia as the only programs with first team representatives in both singles and doubles. Hunter is a repeat selection as a first team All-State singles player in his second year with the Captains while Strause and Macy collect their first career doubles certificate. Macy was also an All-State selection as a singles player in 2019.
Following his senior season, Hunter captured his first national ranking as he closed the season ranked No. 37 in the ITA Men's Tennis national rankings. A first team All-Conference pick in singles following his 2021 campaign, Hunter started at No. 1 all season for the nationally-ranked Captains. He won five matches against the top player from opposing teams and tied for the team lead in total victories.
Hunter also became just the second Captain to qualify for the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championships in nearly a decade. The Virginia Beach native closed his senior year ranked No. 11 in the Atlantic South region.
Joining their senior teammate as first team All-State selections are
Alec Strause and
Ryan Macy, earning their first career nod as a doubles pairing. Strause and Macy led the charge at No. 1 doubles, going 8-5 overall including a win over Division I Norfolk State. The tandem earned first team All-Conference honors and finished the year winning four of their last five matches heading into the Division III National Championships. The duo qualified for the championship event thanks to their sterling record, which included marquee wins over 20th-ranked Thomas and James Yu from Johns Hopkins and 10th-ranked Marcos Dias and Daniel Blonquist from Southern Virginia.
The CNU pairing finished the year ranked No. 16 in the nation according to the ITA final poll and are ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic South region.
