TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the annual All-American awards on Friday morning, listing Christopher Newport junior
Reagan Delp among 24 players selected as singles All-Americans in 2021. With the release, Delp officially was named the first All-American in the history of CNU Women's Tennis.
The ITA honors student-athletes with the All-American title if they are a top 8 seed in the NCAA singles tournament, win one round at the NCAA singles tournament, or finish in the Top 20 in the final Oracle ITA Rankings. The All-American status is awarded to doubles teams that are a top 4 seed in the NCAA doubles tournament, win one round at the NCAA doubles tournament, or finish in the Top 10 in the final Oracle ITA Rankings.
Delp checked the box on two of those standards, winning twice at the NCAA Singles National Championships and also finishing the year ranked No. 16 in the nation, setting program records for both accomplishments.Â
Earlier this week, the Roanoke, Va. native already made history for Christopher Newport by finishing the 2020-21 season with the highest individual national ranking in program history. The final release of the Oracle/ITA National Rankings listed Delp 16th nationally and 7th in the Atlantic South Region.Â
Her record-setting campaign included nine wins this season, including seven at No. 1 singles during the abbreviated schedule this Spring. She went 2-1 in the postseason championship event, defeating WashU senior Ally Persky (6-1, 6-0) in the opening round and taking down 8th-ranked Risa Fukushige from Skidmore College (6-3, 6-4) in the Round of 16. She became just the second player, men's or women's, to advance to the Quarterfinal round of the Singles National Championship Event in the history of CNU tennis.Â
With the success of their junior star, Christopher Newport finished the year ranked in the top-25 nationally after posting a 7-7 overall record on the year.Â
