#3-Seed Christopher Newport Men's Tennis Takes on #2 Southern Virginia in Coast-To-Coast Semifinals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team will open Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship play on Friday as they take on #2-seed Southern Virginia University at 1:30 p.m. The match will be played at the University of Mary Washington with a berth to Saturday's championship on the line. 

Coming into Friday's bout, the Captains are ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic South region with an overall record of 6-5. The Knights enter the match ranked No. 6 in the region with a 10-5 overall mark. Earlier this season, Southern Virginia defeated the Captains, 7-2, in their only matchup on March 6.

Three Christopher Newport players have won five matches to lead the way in singles play for the Captains, highlighted by senior Scotty Hunter who has five on the top line. Sophomore Alec Strause is 5-5 with three wins at No. 3 and sophomore Matthew Dubuque also has notched five wins, including one at No. 2. 

In doubles play, the Captains have been tough to beat with a 66.7% winning percentage in pairs play. Junior Ryan Macy has matched up with Strause throughout the season and the CNU duo are ranked in the region with a 7-4 record at No. 1. Hunter and Dubuque have seven wins together while James Baron and Paul Baron lead the team with an 8-3 overall mark in tandem action. 

Southern Virginia is riding a five-match winning streak heading into Friday's semifinal action. Marcos Dias has played at No. 1 for the Knights and boasts a 10-4 overall record in singles play. 

The winning team will advance to face the winner between #1 Mary Washington and #4 Salisbury. At the time of this post, the Sea Gulls led, 2-1, after doubles in the other semifinal match. Tomorrow's championship will be played at 11:00 a.m.
