FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- With a 5-0 shutout over #3-seeded Salisbury University, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team earned it's sixth consecutive trip to the conference championship match. The Captains (7-6) will take on top-seeded host Mary Washington for the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference title on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Live stats and live video will be provided of all the action at the UMW Tennis Center in Fredericksburg, Va. Links can be found on the women's tennis schedule at CNUsports.com.
In Friday evening's semifinal matchup with the Sea Gulls, the Captains cruised through doubles play for a 3-0 lead and then closed out the win with a pair of victories at 5 and 6 singles. Salisbury falls to 3-4 to close out their 2021 season. Christopher Newport will make the program's sixth straight trip to the conference championship match, dating back to the 2014-15 season.
The Captains continued their season-long trend of doubles domination with an impressive showing in pairs play on Friday. Regionally-ranked
Tessa Trate and
Amanda Yermal made quick work of Veronica Cuellar and Katherine Tamesis on the top line, 8-2, and veteran pair
Reagan Delp and
Kara Ferner swept their opponents Melanie Williams and Sarah Dover, 8-0. The No. 3 match was close, but CNU secured the victory with
Ana Clara Borga and
Kiersten Chang paired for an 8-6 win over Elizabeth Christine and Sarah Cooper.
With the 3-0 sweep through doubles, CNU improved to 24-14 overall in doubles this year. That mark includes an above .500 record on all three lines with the No. 2 group leading the way with nine victories.
The score favored the Captains in all six singles matches when the decision went final. Delp and Trate had first-set victories at 1 and 2, as did Chang at No. 4. Ferner was ahead at No. 3, also, but it was the bottom two lines that clinched it for CNU.
Playing up to No. 5, freshman
Karina Crivtonencu found little issue with the promotion, scoring a 6-0, 6-0 win against Karlie Allen. Also stepping into the starting lineup for her first career postseason appearance,
Kendra Womack surrendered just a single game at No. 6 for a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hannah Carter to help clinch the match.
Mary Washington also cruised to a 5-0 win in their semifinal match against #4 Southern Virginia and will return to the title match to defend their 16-time reign as conference champions. The two teams will take the courts on Saturday to crown the first-ever Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Champions after the Capital Athletic Conference was rebranded earlier this year.
