Christopher Newport Falls to Mary Washington in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- For the sixth straight year, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team reached the conference championship match but the Captains could not unseat the 17-time champion University of Mary Washington as the Eagles captured a 9-0 win at the Ed Hegmann Tennis Facility on Saturday afternoon. The match, which was played to completion in approximately three hours, dropped the Captains to 7-7 on the season and improved the Eagles to 12-2.

UMW captured the program's first ever Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference title and 17th consecutive overall crown, continuing a run that started as members of the previously named Capital Athletic Conference.

Christopher Newport was faced with taking on one of the top teams in the nation as Mary Washington came in ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic South. The Eagles are led by Abby Moghtader, ranked second in singles and doubles with partner Lauren Quinn. The Captains' top-ranked tandem scored four games against Moghtader and Quinn, but Tessa Trate and Amanda Yermal ultimately fell, 8-4.

In the No. 2 doubles matchup between CNU's Reagan Delp and Kara Ferner and Mary Washington's Claire Coleman and Amanda Hagino, the Captains had their closest match of the day. The veteran duo from CNU gave the Eagles' tandem everything they had before falling, 8-6.

After a doubles sweep, the Eagles clinched the conference title with wins at No. 6 and No. 1 singles. Rachel Cooper defeated CNU's Karina Crivtonencu in the former (6-0, 6-0) and Delp suffered the setback to Coleman in the latter (6-1, 6-0).

CNU fell in the remaining four matches with solid showings from rookie Kiersten Chang at No. 4, falling to Hagino by a score of 6-4, 6-4, Amanda Yermal at No. 5 against Hana Kimmey, suffering a 6-3, 6-4 loss, and Trate at No. 2. Facing Moghtader, Trade snared four wins in the second set while taking on the highly-ranked opponent.
