SPARKS, Md. -- Solidifying his spot as one of the nation's finest defensemen,
Max Wayne hauled in second-team All-American honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine for his historic work with the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team during the 2021 campaign.
Â
The senior star is now the program's first three-time All-American. Incredibly, he has been celebrated by three different organizations over the past three years. He collected national honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association in 2019 before garnering the recognition from Inside Lacrosse last season. He is also the first Captain to receive an All-American citation from USA Lacrosse Magazine in school history.
Â
An imposing presence on the defensive side of the ball, Wayne has anchored the back line throughout the 2021 campaign. So far this season, he has 28 caused turnovers, which ranks third in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference. That total also stands ninth on the program's all-time single-season charts.
Â
Locking down the opposition, Wayne has forced at least one miscue in 15 of his 17 appearances, including a season-high four takeaways during the second round of the NCAA Tournament at No. 12 Stevenson on May 16. Overall, he has caused multiple turnovers in nine games during the year.
Â
In addition to his 28 takeaways, Wayne also has 39 ground balls this season. He has collected at least one in each of his 17 outings, including a season-high five against No. 5 Lynchburg on March 26. Making contributions all over the field, the Ashburn, Virginia native also landed his first career goal with a 55-yard missile at Randolph-Macon on March 17.
Â
For his work during the year, Wayne was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on April 26 and earned a spot on the league's All-Tournament Team following a terrific showcase in the playoffs.
Â
In his career, Wayne ranks second in program history with 122 caused turnovers. Meanwhile, he has also started 62 consecutive games entering this weekend, which stands as the longest "Iron Man" streak in school lore.
Â
Wayne and the rest of his teammates will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when Christopher Newport battles No. 4 Lynchburg in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Salisbury's Sea Gull Stadium.
