No. 21 Captains Head to Southern Virginia for Women's Lacrosse Showdown on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The 21st-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will wrap up its three-game road swing on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when the Captains take on Southern Virginia in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference battle at Knight Stadium.

Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport sports a 6-5 record, including a 1-3 mark in league action. Southern Virginia sits at 6-3 overall and 0-1 against conference competition.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Knights are not allowing spectators from visiting schools to attend their athletic events this spring.

The Captains are coming off an 11-8 setback at No. 22 St. Mary's (Md.) on Monday. During that bout, Cat Leighty led the visitors with five points, including three assists. Zoe Dyer also added a pair of goals, and Kelsey Winters handed out her 40th assist of the season. With that performance, she became just the fourth player in program history to reach that benchmark.

Monday's battle with the Seahawks was Christopher Newport's fifth consecutive game against a nationally-ranked opponent, marking the longest streak in school history. During that five-game gauntlet, Leighty paced the Captains with 24 points, including a six-goal explosion against No. 23 Lynchburg. Meanwhile, Winters led the team with 14 assists during that span, while Dyer had a team-high 16 goals.

On the defensive side, Joely Stevens has 10 takeaways in her last six appearances, and Becca Creekmore has three double-digit save efforts during that same period. Additionally, junior captain Riley Rafterry-Lee returned to the field last week against St. Mary's (Md.) and has already caused a turnover in each of her previous two appearances.

Southern Virginia saw its three-game winning streak snapped during its last outing at Salisbury on March 30. Against the Sea Gulls, Lauren Thatcher and Paige Sieverts both had two points for the Knights, while Natalie Rice had five draw controls. Jessica Webb also added 15 saves and three ground balls during the 18-4 setback against SU.

Overall this season, Alissa Johnson leads the Coast-to-Coast Conference with 31 goals, while her 42 points rank second among league competitors. Sieverts also sits fifth overall - and first among freshmen - with 10 assists. Meanwhile, Chloe Mitchell is second in the conference with 57 draw controls, and Webb has compiled a .392 save percentage and a 12.01 goals-against average.

Wednesday's meeting will be the seventh all-time match-up between Christopher Newport and Southern Virginia. The Captains currently hold a 6-0 edge in the series, including a 24-5 win in 2019. During the most recent battle, Dyer posted six points against the Knights, while Leighty and Kendall Krause had two goals apiece.

Christopher Newport will return home on Saturday when the squad hosts No. 19 Mary Washington at 4 p.m. The Captains will also hold their annual Senior Day celebration before that contest.
