LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered it's first loss of the season to a Division III opponent on Saturday, falling 6-3 at Washington & Lee (5-1). The Captains fell to 4-2 after it's modest four-match winning streak came to a close in the hard-fought loss to the Generals.
Kara Ferner had the best day for the Captains, winning in both singles and doubles. In doubles play, Ferner and
Reagan Delp continued an impressive start to the season with their fifth win in six matches. The veteran duo defeated Kaitlyn Chalker and Nell Covington at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
Washington & Lee picked up the win at No. 1 doubles and the momentum swung in favor of the home team with the pivotal second doubles point at No. 3. The Generals pair outlasted CNU's
Kiersten Chang and
Megan Bauer for an 8-6 win.
In singles play, rookie
Karina Crivtonencu got an early win for the Captains with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 against Claire Lacksen, knotting the match score at 2 points apiece. The match nearly turned when rookies Chang and
Tessa Trate forced tiebreakers in their matches, but W&L managed to navigate the trouble and earned wins in four of the other five bouts. Chang suffered a 7-6 (4), 6-1 loss at No. 4 singles to Margaret Colton and Trate earned a tough second-set win but the match was already decided heading into her third set. Tessa dropped her No. 2 singles match to Gabi Moss by a final score of 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (11-9).
Rounding out the day was Ferner's win at No. 3 singles against Izzy Koziol. The senior captain showed her grit in a long singles bout, battling back from a first set loss. She powered past Koziol in a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) final.
The Captains return to action next Saturday, April 10 as they travel to Salisbury University for Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference action. CNU takes on the Sea Gulls at 2:00 p.m.
