ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Taking on North Carolina Wesleyan College in non-conference action, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback on the road Saturday, falling to 4-3 on the season. The Battling Bishops improved to 13-2 with the win.
CNU got one win each in singles and doubles against the USA South Athletic Conference opponent. In doubles,
Matthew Dubuque and
Scotty Hunter paired up for an 8-7 win over Max Robinson and Tshepo Mosarwa, getting Christopher Newport on the board.
The Captains faced a 2-1 deficit after doubles with N.C. Wesleyan tipping the team score in their favor with a narrow win at No. 2 doubles. Roberto Puig and John Falke just squeaked past the Captains' Baron brothers on the second line as
James Baron and
Paul Baron suffered an 8-7 setback.
In singles action, rookie
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen picked up the lone win of the day with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6. He downed Tshepo Mosarwa in the match.
Alec Strause also earned a set victory in the loss, and battled hard as he played at No. 2 singles. The first set came down to a tiebreaker that Strause lost, 7-6, and then the Captains second-year star surged back for a 6-1 win in the second set. Unfortunately, the rally would end there as Juan Vallejo rebounded for a 10-5 victory in the third.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday, April 7 as they travel to Division I Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
