NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing indoors due to unseasonably low temperatures and a threat of rain, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to Washington & Lee University on Saturday.
With the win, the Generals improved to 10-2 while the loss dropped Christopher Newport's record to 5-5 overall.
The Captains got their first team point in doubles when
Reagan Delp and
Kara Ferner paired for an 8-5 win over their opponents, Gabi Moss and Becket Waters. The win came at No. 2 doubles for Christopher Newport. In the No. 1 doubles battle, the Captains narrowly missed their second point in a battle of regionally-ranked tandems. Taylor Garcia and Maragert Carlton just edged the Captains ranked duo of
Tessa Trate and
Amanda Yermal for an 8-7 (7-5) win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In singles play, the Generals clinched the match with wins at 1, 3, and 4. The most entertaining head-to-head bout went in the win column for the Captains, however, as Trate earned the win at No. 2 against Moss. After dropping the first set to the General, Trate rallied for a pivotal 7-6 win in the second set. Headed into the superset third, the Captains' freshman pulled away late for a 10-6 win. The victory was a key win over a regionally-ranked opponent and improved the CNU newcomer to 6-1 on the season.
The Captains will take on Johns Hopkins University on May 2 at Noon for their final match of the regular season.
