NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking the courts in what was originally scheduled to be the final home match of the season, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team celebrated Senior Day in a big way with an 8-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan University (8-9). The Captains swept doubles and captured wins in five singles bouts for the final score on a gorgeous Spring day at the Eyre Courts in Newport News.
The Senior Day match featured a ceremony honoring the four Christopher Newport players competing in their final season.
James Baron,
Walter Buck,
Luke Fernandez, and
Scotty Hunter make up the senior class of 2021 and the quartet was honored in front of fans on Friday.
The match was meant to be the final bout of the regular season but the Captains have snared one more home matchup this season as Director of Tennis
Eric Christiansen announced the addition of Johns Hopkins University to the slate on May 2.
In Friday's match against the Marlins, seniors
Scotty Hunter and
James Baron appeared and combined for three victories. Hunter won in both singles and doubles while Baron continued his incredible season paired with his brother for another win in tandem play.
The Baron Bros. have played in all 10 duals this season for the Captains, posting an 8-2 overall record together. James and his brother
Paul Baron have the best record in doubles this season for CNU, including a perfect 6-0 record at No. 3. In Friday's match, the duo played at No. 2 and picked off their second victory on that line with an 8-6 victory against Henry West and Anthony Wilson. Hunter paired with
Matthew Dubuque for an 8-0 win at No. 3, downing Michael Portera and Connor Cummings.
Rounding out the doubles sweep was
Ryan Macy and
Alec Strause, fresh off their first regional ranking as a pairing. Tabbed No. 7 in the Atlantic South, the Captains pair won 8-2 over Mitchell Perry and Felix Bevic.
In singles action, Hunter capped off his strong senior day with a 7-5, 6-2 win to protect his regional ranking of No. 8. CNU won 3-6 with Strause,
Tyler Hyun,
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen, and Dubuque earning the wins in straight sets. At No. 3, Strause defeated Wilson (6-3, 6-2); at No. 4, Hyun earned a win over West by the same score (6-3, 6-2); Hansen captured a 6-0, 6-2 win over Portera at No. 5; and Dubuque surrendered just a single game in his No. 6 win over Cummings (6-1, 6-0).
Christopher Newport improved to 6-4 on the season with the win and will next take on the Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins at 3:00 pm on May 2.
