CNU Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season With 6-3 Setback to Ranked Johns Hopkins

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A pair of Captains making their first ever appearance against national power Johns Hopkins University earned wins in singles play on Sunday to highlight the action but the Blue Jays defeated Christopher Newport men's tennis, 6-3. Sophomore Alec Strause and rookie Eddy Porsmyr Hansen each earned wins in the regular season finale to lead the way for CNU.

Coming into the matchup, Hopkins was ranked #4 in the Atlantic South region while posting an undefeated record. The regionally-ranked showdown also featured the Captains, ranked #7 in the same area. With the win, JHU improved to 8-0 while CNU closed out the 2021 spring season with a 6-5 record.

Strause was 2-0 in the match as he also picked up a doubles victory at No. 1 in pairs play. He and partner Ryan Macy were leading Thomas Yu and James Yu, 6-4, when the Blue Jays were forced to retire and succumb the victory to CNU. It was the lone doubles point that went in favor of the home team as the Captains suffered 8-4 and 8-2 losses at No. 2 and 3, respectively.

In singles action, Strause picked up a straight set win over Daniel Ardila at No. 3. He won the individual match, 6-4, 6-2, and cut into the Hopkins lead. Porsmyr Hansen was shut out in the first set but rallied for a three-set victory at No. 6 against Brian Wang. He won 0-6, 7-5, 10-5 to earn his fourth win of the season.

The Captains, who locked up the #3 seed in this week's Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship, will return to action in the conference tournament semifinals on Friday, May 7. CNU will take on second-seeded Southern Virginia at 2:30 p.m. with a championship match berth on the line.
