BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Improving to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play this spring, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory on the road in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference action on Friday against Southern Virginia University. The Captains won two doubles bouts and swept singles action for the conference win.
Kara Ferner and
Reagan Delp each secured a pair of wins in the match to lead the way for Christopher Newport. Delp won with Ferner at No. 2 doubles before picking up the win at No. 1 singles while Ferner wrapped her performance with the win at No. 2 singles. The duo picked up an 8-1 victory in doubles together, defeating Morgan Blount and Alyssa Sewell. Ferner then put Christopher Newport just one win away from clinching the match when she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles against Sewell.
The match was clinched at No. 5 singles where
Kendra Womack defeated Hannah Smith by a final score of 6-3, 6-1. The Captains picked up straight set wins in all six singles matches including victories for
Kiersten Chang (6-1, 6-4) at No. 3,
Lucy Davis (7-5, 6-3) at No. 4, and
Ana Clara Borga (6-1, 6-3) at No. 6. Delp also won her match in straight sets at No. 1, defeating Anna Peterson by a final score of 7-5, 6-4 to finish out the match.
In doubles play
Tessa Trate and
Amanda Yermal added an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The Captains tandem took down Peterson and Lindsey Brown for the win.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday, April 3 as they travel to Washington & Lee University for a Noon start against the Generals.
