CNU Women's Tennis Drops 6-3 Decision to Mary Washington in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Action

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport freshman Tessa Trate earned a pair of victories to highlight the action, but the Captains suffered a 6-3 loss against Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon. The Captains are now 5-4 overall on the season with a 3-1 mark in conference play while the Eagles improved to 8-2, 3-0. 

Trate started the day with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles with tandem partner Amanda Yermal. The CNU duo picked up the win against Abby Moghtader and Lauren Quinn to get the Captains on the board. 

The other two matches in doubles play went to the road team as CNU faced a 2-1 deficit heading into singles. 

Senior Kara Ferner earned a straight set win at No. 3 singles to give the Captains their second point of the day when she dropped Quinn by a final score of 6-4, 6-4. Then came Trate's second win as she took down Claire Coleman in a very close matchup. Trate won 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-5. 

In the No. 1 singles bout, Reagan Delp stretched Moghtader to a third set before suffering the loss 6-0, 3-6, 6-4; rookie Kiersten Chang also won a set in her match at No. 4 against Amanda Hagino before falling 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. 

CNU has two more scheduled matches in the regular season before taking on the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Captains will host Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, April 23 at 3:00 pm and Washington & Lee on Saturday, April 24 at 2:00 pm.
