NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University lost twice Saturday afternoon at Salisbury University in a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader. The Sea Gulls took the opener, 8-0 in six innings, and then won the nightcap by a 7-2 margin. The defeats dropped the 11th-ranked Captains to 22-10 overall and 2-2 in the C2C.
Six different Salisbury players blasted a total of seven home runs in the twin bill at Sea Gull Softball Stadium. The Gulls, ranked eighth in the nation, erupted for 15 runs on 20 hits for the day and improved to 19-5 overall and 4-0 atop the C2C. Salisbury is now 14-0 at home this season.
Christopher Newport's only runs of the day came on solo home runs in the second game from senior
Patty Maye Ohanian and junior
Caitlin Abernethy, who smacked her first of the season in the fourth inning of game two. Ohanian, who returned to the Captains lineup this week following a six-week hiatus due to a leg injury, clubbed her second home run of the season and 33rd of her career an inning later.Â
Senior starting pitcher
Emily Weatherholtz took the loss for the Captains in the opener, dropping to 11-3 on the season. Salisbury's Kaleigh Edwards, who homered in both games, smacked a two-run shot in the sixth inning of the opening game to close out the Captains, 8-0, due to the eight-run mercy rule. Sophomore starter
Gracie Vallejos suffered the defeat in the nightcap, a 7-2 SU triumph, and is now 10-5 for the year.Â
The Captains posted only seven hits in the doubleheader off Salisbury pitching, two in the opener and five in the nightcap. Christopher Newport will host the Eagles of Mary Washington next Saturday, April 24th, at Captains Park in a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader.
