Saturday's match-up, which will be the first in history between the Captains and Greyhounds, will feature an exciting battle in the middle of the field as both squads have had their share of success with draw controls during the year. Christopher Newport is led by
Sam Wettengel, who ranks second in the Coast-to-Coast Conference with 72 draws, including a record-tying 13 during her last appearance against No. 4 Salisbury on Wednesday.
In addition to Wettengel,
Eleanor Collins leads all freshmen in the league with 32 draws, while
Gracie Sanders has 26.
Meanwhile, Moravian comes into the weekend averaging 17.43 draws-per-game, which ranks 13th in the NCAA. Lindsey Strohl leads the team with 39 draw controls, while Meaghan McMullan, Olivia Clearie, and Samantha Cherenson all have at least 20 apiece. Overall, the Greyhounds have controlled 62 percent of their draws this season.
Along with their success on the draw, both teams also feature lethal offensive contributors. For Christopher Newport,
Cat Leighty and
Zoe Dyer are tied for second in the conference with 36 goals apiece, while
Kelsey Winters has a league-high 77 points and 47 assists. Featuring a well-balanced arsenal, eight different Captains have at least 10 goals this season, and five have 20 or more.
For Moravian, McMullan leads the Landmark Conference with 31 goals and 44 points. Strohl also ranks sixth in the league with 20 strikes. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Breylyn Friedman has compiled a .391 save percentage and an 14.46 goals-against-average, while McMullan has forced a team-high 14 turnovers.
The Captains also feature a stingy defensive unit, which is led by sophomore goalie
Becca Creekmore. The second-year star currently ranks eighth in the NCAA with 103 saves. Meanwhile, Wettengel leads the team with 22 takeaways, while Sanders has 21 of her own.
After this weekend's clash, Christopher Newport will return to action on April 20 when the squad wraps up the regular season with a 5 p.m. battle at Meredith.
