Captains Hold Off Marymount in Women's Basketball Exhibition on the Road, 72-68

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Christopher Newport junior Natalie Terwilliger posted a double-double to headline a 72-68 victory over Marymount University in exhibition play on Saturday afternoon. Terwilliger notched the game high total with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Captains while knocking down 6-of-12 shots from the field.

Joining Terwilliger in double figures was Phylicia McInnis, who buried four of her six attempts, including three triples, to finish second on the squad with 13 points. She also added five steals and two rebounds while playing a tema-high 22 minutes. Rookie Alivia Giles also notced five thefts while sophomore Anaya Simmons grabbed four as the Captains finished with 20 steals as a team.

Christopher Newport fell behind by as many as 12 points in the first quarter before trailing by ten after ten minutes of play, 25-15. The last basket of the first quarter was a two by McInnis, and she added a three-pointer to carry that momentum into the start of the second stanza. CNU chipped away at the first-half lead before finally a three-point play by Giles with 3:22 remaining set up the go-ahead long-range jumper by McInnis with 2:54 showing. The Captains took the lead as Giles and Jasmine Norman added buckets to hold off the Saints before Katy Rader drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to five the visitors a 40-36 edge at the break.

Marymount only led briefly in the third quarter before the Captains took a nine-point lead on a quick 7-0 burst that spanned just 21 seconds of game clock in the middle of the period. McInnis hit another triple followed by back-to-back trips to the free-throw line for Bailey Hodges and Giles, sinking all four. The Captains lead at 56-47 was not safe as Marymount managed to pull back within one in the fourth quarter, 67-66, on a free-throw by Terra Dzambo with three minutes left. Still, CNU would not relinquish the lead again as Norman converted a pair of free throws and Terwilliger converted off a feed from Simmons with less than a minute to go. The defense clamped down and only one point was scored by either team after that with Gabbi San Diego knocking down a shot at the charity stripe for the final score, 72-68.

Christopher Newport will play next at Shepherd University on Thursday, March 11. Tip is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
