SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Wrapping up a nine game exhibition schedule, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team suffered an 83-72 setback on Thursday evening at NCAA Division II Shepherd University. The Captains led the majority of the game but a fourth quarter surge from the Rams (2-0) proved to be the difference in the matchup.

The home team outscored the Captains, 28-15, in the final ten minutes to take over the lead and hold off Christopher Newport. CNU held a 44-38 advantage at halftime.

Three different Captains finished in double figures led by senior Jasmine Norman with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. The guard drilled a pair of three-pointers and was also 2-for-2 at the line while picking up an assist and a steal. Sophomore Anaya Simmons added 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and rookie Camille Malagar finished with the same shooting numbers for 10 points. Malagar joined Norman and Jovia Winkey with a pair of three-pointers in the game.

In total, the Captains knocked down 10 three-pointers on 24 attempts for a 41.7% shooting mark beyond the arc. That was just under their game total from the field of 41.8% with a 28-for-67 showing against the Rams.

The teams matched eachother in rebounds with 34 apiece. Sondra Fan, Julia Ng, and Winkey each tied for the team high with four boards in the game.

Shepherd leaned on three top scorers getting 24 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists from Abby Beeman while Marley McLaughlin and Sydney Clayton added 19 and 18 points, respectively. The CNU defense forced 21 turnovers and grabbed seven steals.

Over the course of the nine game exhibition season, the Captains were led by Anaya Simmons (13.5 ppg) and Natalie Terwilliger (13.1 ppg). The front-court duo each eclipsed 100 points in the short slate while Terwilliger led the team with 48 rebounds (7.3 rpg). As a team, the Captains Chaos defense averaged 14.6 steals per game and forced 27 turnovers per contest.
