Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team fell to 1-1 overall on the season with a 7-2 setback at Southern Virginia University (1-1) on Saturday afternoon, 7-2. The Captains picked up wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles but could not overcome a strong showing by the Knights at home.
Christopher Newport traveled to Buena Vista on a chilly Saturday afternoon for the bout, which started with close doubles play. The Captains top pairing of
Ryan Macy and
Alec Strause battled against the No. 1 duo for Southern Virginia, Marcos Dias and Daniel Blonquist, but ultimately suffered an 8-6 loss. That would give the Knights a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play as the teams split the other two matches.
For the Captains,
Paul Baron and
James Baron paired up for the lone doubles victory at No. 3, winning 8-4 over Paul Monson and Tanner Bassett.
In singles play,
James Baron had an impressive match at No. 3 before falling to Bassett in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 4-6. The win in singles for CNU came at No. 6 where
Matthew Dubuque continued his strong start to the season with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Andrew Blonquist.
Christopher Newport will take a week off before returning to conference play with a match against St. Mary's College of Maryland at home next Saturday, March 13. The head-to-head battle in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference action will start at 11:00 am.
