Christopher Newport is coming off of a historic 22-1 victory over N.C. Wesleyan in the season opener on Tuesday. During that battle, 10 different Captains registered multi-goal efforts, marking the highest single-game total in program history. The 22 tallies also were the most scored by the team in a season opener since 2002.
Headlining the attack,
Gracie Sanders registered a hat-trick, while
Kelsey Winters collected a team-high seven points, including five assists.
Zoe Dyer and
Cat Leighty also had five points apiece, while
Syd Guidi kicked off her collegiate career with two goals and an assist.
In addition to Guidi, the Captains saw several freshmen orchestrate impressive debuts on Tuesday.
Sloane McDonald and
Eleanor Collins also scored twice, while
Paige Williams added a tally of her own.
Emma Jackson also earned a start and collected a pair of ground balls, and Collins rounded out her day with five draw controls and a pair of takeaways.
With her five draws, Collins became the first freshman to reach that total in a season opener since former All-American
Sarah Culver posted six in a win over Shenandoah on February 20, 2016.
Leading the defensive effort on Tuesday,
Kendall Krause contributed two takeaways and three ground balls, while
Taylor Schoolar came through with her first collegiate victory. The sophomore goalkeeper shut out the Battling Bishops for the first 30 minutes, including a fantastic save on a free-position attempt early in the opening period.
Roanoke was equally impressive in its season debut last Saturday. During a home bout against Virginia Wesleyan, the Maroons erupted for a 19-1 victory. Piecing together a defensive masterpiece, the hosts held the Marlins without a single shot during the first half while building a 13-0 lead. Overall, Roanoke forced 13 turnovers during the game and held a 14-4 advantage on draws.
On an individual level, Emerson Foster had six goals, five draws, and a pair of takeaways for the Maroons. Lilly Blair also had four goals, while Ellie Armstrong pitched in with four rollers and three points. Between the pipes, three different players saw action, including Carly Schoudel, who earned the win with a pristine first half.
In 16 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 9-7 edge, including five straight wins dating back to 2015. The Captains won last year's bout, 15-10, behind eight goals from Dyer and seven assists by Winters.
Following this weekend's action, Christopher Newport will kick off its home slate on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. non-conference test against Virginia Wesleyan.
