Christopher Newport jumped up two spots in the latest IWLCA National Coaches Poll after splitting a pair of top-25 battles last week. The Captains opened things with a 17-4 win against No. 23 Lynchburg on Wednesday before dropping a hard-fought 18-12 decision at No. 17 Mary Washington on Saturday.
In the conference opener against the nationally-ranked Eagles,
Cat Leighty erupted for five goals, including the 100th strike of her career. The senior star now has five hat-tricks this year, including three straight entering Wednesday. Overall, she ranks second in the conference with 26 total goals this season.
Along with Leighty,
Kelsey Winters also added four points against Mary Washington, which bumped her season total to 54. That ranks first in the conference and third in the NCAA. Leighty and
Zoe Dyer also sit in the top-10 among league performers in total points this season.
Meanwhile,
Sam Wettengel remains among the top-two in the conference in ground balls (22), draw controls (47), and caused turnovers (20).
Kendall Krause also stands fifth in the league in ground balls and is the only Captain with at least two in every game this season. She also has at least two takeaways in five of her appearances to go along with 14 goals on the offensive end.
On the other side of the field, St. Mary's (Md.) posted a 12-7 win over Randolph-Macon in the squad's last appearance on Sunday. Against the Yellow Jackets, Lily Davison drove home a team-high four goals, while Lucy Gussio had a hat-trick. Stephanie Heffron also dominated with nine draw controls, and Aimee Uibel added nine saves while earning the win.
So far this season, Uibel leads the conference with a stellar .512 save percentage. She also ranks second in goals-against-average with a 9.97 mark. Offensively, Gussio boasts a team-high 16 points and 13 goals, while Kelly Emge has handed out four assists.Â
Wednesday's tilt will mark the 18th all-time meeting between the two programs. Christopher Newport currently holds a 9-8 edge in the series, including a 14-13 triumph in the last bout during the 2019 conference tournament. In that game, Leighty had six points for the Captains, while Dyer dished out two assists.
Following the midweek matchup, the Captains will return to the road for a noon test at No. 4 Salisbury on Saturday.
