NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the third straight year, the Christopher Newport field hockey program earned the country's highest academic achievement honor as the Captains received the National Academic Team Award, which was bestowed on Monday morning by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

The national honor recognizes programs that earned a team grade-point-average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2020-21 academic year.

Overall, the 2020 squad is the fifth team in program history to receive the prestigious award. In addition to their recent three-peat, the 2013 and 2016 Captains were previously celebrated for their scholarly achievements.

Along with the team award, several Captains hauled in individual accolades for their academic work last week. Twelve members of the program were selected to the NFHCA National Academic Squad after posting cumulative GPAs of 3.3 or higher through the fall semester. Among the decorated members of the roster, seniors
Angelica Florendo and
Jackie Kotoriy added their names to a list of five Captains who earned the honor during each of their four seasons with the team.
