No. 25 Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Faces Another Top-25 Test on Saturday Afternoon at No. 17 Mary Washington

Live Stats // Video Stream

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Riding a three-game winning streak, the 25th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to continue its roll on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains square off with 17th-ranked Mary Washington in a Coast-to-Coast Conference bout at the Battleground Turf Stadium.

Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport boasts a 5-2 record, including a 2-1 mark in road action. Meanwhile, Mary Washington is 1-3 overall and 0-3 at home.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, visiting fans are not permitted to attend home events at Mary Washington this spring. However, the Eagles will provide live stats and a video stream of Saturday's action at UMWEagles.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are looking to build upon the momentum from their historic 17-4 victory against No. 23 Lynchburg on Wednesday. That was the program's third all-time win against a ranked foe, while the 13-goal triumph was the largest margin of victory against a top-25 team in school history.

Leading the way against the Hornets, Zoe Dyer and Cat Leighty both registered six goals for the hosts. With her performance, Dyer officially reached the 100-point plateau in her career. Meanwhile, Kelsey Winters handed out five assists against Lynchburg, including her 54th career helper. That moved the sophomore standout into the top-10 on the program's all-time charts.

While the offense has continued to hang double-digit figures on the opposition this season, the defense has been equally spectacular. Christopher Newport leads the conference with an 8.29 goals-against-average while forcing a league-best 85 turnovers.

On an individual level, Becca Creekmore ranks second in the league with a 10.01 goals-against-average, while Sam Wettengel boasts a conference-high 20 takeaways. Incredibly, Julia Iapicca, Kendall Krause, Hope Hunter, and Gracie Sanders all rank in the top-10 in caused turnovers as well.

Mary Washington is coming off its first victory of the season on Wednesday after topping Shenandoah, 14-8, in Winchester. Kayla Sarazin led the Eagles with seven points, including five goals. Meanwhile, Katie Blair also snapped off a hat-trick while helping give first-year head coach Maddie Taghon her first collegiate triumph.

Although the Eagles sit at 1-3, all three of their setbacks have come against nationally-ranked foes. Mary Washington lost to No. 23 Lynchburg in double-overtime to open the season before suffering a 13-7 setback against No. 4 Salisbury and an 8-3 loss against No. 3 Washington & Lee.

Despite the gauntlet, Sarazin has collected 15 points this season, including 10 goals. Meanwhile, between the pipes, Reilly Miller ranks second in the conference with a .474 save percentage. Overall, she has 37 total stops and a 10.28 goals-against-average.

Saturday's match-up will mark the 18th meeting between the two programs with Mary Washington holding a 16-1 edge in the series. The Eagles won the last showdown, 18-7, in 2019. During that game, Dyer had a pair of goals for the Captains, while Wettengel contributed six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Following the road trip to Fredericksburg, Christopher Newport will return home on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. tilt against St. Mary's (Md.).
