NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the team's first action since March 13, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team showed no signs of rust in a 9-0 shutout victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College (3-5). The Captains improved to 3-1 overall this season with the win.
The two teams battled through a back-and-forth set of doubles matches before Christopher Newport squeezed out a 3-0 sweep.
Megan Bauer and
Kiersten Chang had the quickest match, downing Chandler Brice and Julie Schoorsmans by a final score of 8-3. The other two tandem bouts would stretch, though, and wins in the tight matches would provide momentum for the Captains into singles action.
At No. 1 doubles,
Tessa Trate and
Amanda Yermal downed their opponents, Stefanie Wilske and Elisa Mariotti by a final score of 8-5. In the No. 2 decision,
Reagan Delp and
Kara Ferner outlasted the Battling Bishops pairing of Talitha Rowan and Giulia Zanetti, 8-7.
With a 3-0 lead in hand, the Captains coasted to the win with a perfect run through singles action as well. Rookie
Karina Crivtonencu surrendered just a single game at No. 6 against Brice (6-1, 6-0) and veteran
Amanda Yermal posted a perfect run against Ana Aguilar at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0). Trate and Chang won in straight sets at 2 and 4, respectively, and the Captains got three-set victories in the final two bouts.
Continuing her strong start to the season, Delp won her third straight match at No. 1 singles. Taking on Wilske, Delp won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Senior
Kara Ferner also defeated her opponent at No. 3, Mariotti, in a final score of 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
Christopher Newport will return to action on March 28 as they travel to Washington & Lee University for non-conference action. The match is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
