NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After jumping into the national rankings for the first time in five years, the 25th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will face a tough test right out of the gate as the Captains host 23rd-ranked Lynchburg in a non-conference contest at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport sits at 4-2 on the season, including 2-1 at home. Meanwhile, Lynchburg is 3-1 overall and 1-1 on the road.

Adhering to the campus COVID-19 guidelines, access to Wednesday's game will be limited to two designated family members of each player and coach on Christopher Newport's roster along with a select number of students and staff from the university. Opposing fans and other interested parties will not be permitted to attend the contest. For specific details on the spectator guidelines, please read the athletic department's 2021 spring sports policy, which is available at the top of this release.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport comes into the contest on a two-game roll after upending Marymount and Shenandoah last week. Leading the way, Kelsey Winters posted 16 total points during the two victories and was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week for that run. Her award-winning stretch was headlined by a seven-assist masterpiece against Marymount, which equaled the third-best single-game effort in program history.

Equally effective last week, Sam Wettengel notched 10 caused turnovers and 16 draw controls during a well-rounded performance. Her six takeaways against Marymount tied the third-most by a Captain, while her 10 draws against Shenandoah matched the eighth-highest total in program history.

In addition to their recent work, the Captains have been effective all year when it comes to taking care of the ball. Christopher Newport is averaging only 11 turnovers per game, which stands as the seventh-lowest rate in the NCAA. Among the most effective ball-handlers on the squad, Cat Leighty and Kendall Krause have started all six games and committed only two turnovers apiece, while freshman Sloane McDonald also has just two miscues during an impressive run at the start of her collegiate career.

On the other side of the field, Lynchburg comes into the game in the midst of a grueling stretch. The Hornets dropped a 16-12 decision to No. 25 St. Mary's last Wednesday before upending No. 14 Mary Washington, 13-12, in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday. Meanwhile, after their showdown with the 25th-ranked Captains, they host No. 3 Washington & Lee this weekend.

Despite their recent gauntlet, the Hornets are averaging 16 goals per game, including 20 points from Kelsi Trevisan. Meanwhile, fellow All-Conference performer Erin Gardner has a team-high five caused turnovers while ranking in the top-50 nationally with 23 draw controls. In the crease, Julia Broughton has a .306 save percentage and an 11.36 goals-against-average during her time between the pipes.

Wednesday's game will mark the 17th match-up between Christopher Newport and Lynchburg. The Captains currently hold a 10-6 edge in the series, including a 15-8 triumph in 2019. During the most recent showdown, Dyer and Leighty both had four goals for the Captains, while Trevison added a game-high five strikes for the visitors.

After the midweek contest, Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the squad opens league action with a 1 p.m. test at 17th-ranked Mary Washington.
