NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will return home for a non-conference test against Shenandoah on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the weekend match-up, the Captains sit at 3-2 overall, including 1-1 at home. Meanwhile, Shenandoah is 1-2 with a 1-1 mark on the road.

Adhering to the campus COVID-19 guidelines, access to Saturday's game will be limited to two designated family members of each player and coach on Christopher Newport's roster along with a select number of students and staff from the university. Opposing fans and other interested parties will not be permitted to attend the contest. For specific details on the spectator guidelines, please read the athletic department's 2021 spring sports policy, which is available at the top of this release.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport is coming off a 20-7 victory at Marymount on Wednesday. That game marked the third this season in which the Captains scored at least 20 goals, equaling the most since the 2013 squad had nine such outings during its run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Headlining Wednesday's game, Kelsey Winters produced seven assists, which equaled the third-highest total in program history. Meanwhile, on the other end, Sam Wettengel had six takeaways. That also equaled the third-most by a Captain. Additionally, she became just the second player to register at least five caused turnovers, five draw controls, and five ground balls in a single game after filling out the stat sheet with six draws and five rollers against the Saints.

Along with the historic contributors, nine other players also notched at least one point on Wednesday, including hat-tricks by Julia Iapicca and Gracie Sanders. Emma Jackson also tallied three ground balls and a takeaway on the defensive side, while Becca Creekmore finished with four saves.

So far this season, Winters leads the Coast-to-Coast Conference with 37 points and 25 assists, while Wettengel has a league-high 12 caused turnovers. As a team, Christopher Newport ranks first in goals-per-game (17.40) and goals-against-average (8.00).

Shenandoah enters Saturday with a 1-2 record, although the squad's two setbacks came at the hands of No. 5 Salisbury and No. 21 St. Mary's (Md.). The Hornets last played on March 13 when they dismantled Ferrum, 19-2. Emma Stiffler and Megan Egan both had five goals during that outing.

Overall, Alyson Bittinger leads Shenandoah with 13 points, including 11 goals. Stiffler also has eight strikes and a team-high five assists. Between the pipes, Ashley MacFarlane has started all three games while compiling a .491 save percentage and a 10.64 goals-against-average.

Saturday's meeting will mark the 23rd battle between Shenandoah and Christopher Newport. The Captains hold a 19-3 edge in the series, although the Hornets won last year's match-up, 11-10. During that game, Hope Hunter posted a hat-trick in her collegiate debut, while Alyson Bittinger had a game-high five goals for the Hornets.

Following this weekend's action, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a 5 p.m. contest against Lynchburg on Wednesday.
