NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team swept a pair of matches Saturday, including the first Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference match of the year against St. Mary's College of Maryland (0-2, 0-1) to improve it's overall record to 3-1 this season. The Captains shut out the Seahaws, 9-0, and then captured an 8-1 win over Averett in non-league action later in the afternoon.
In the morning action, the Captains surrendered just a single game in doubles action to quickly take a 3-0 lead in the match. In individual play, three matches were perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins, while the other three players combined for just nine games lost.
Scotty Hunter,
Matthew Dubuque, and
Paul Baron each earned a pair of wins in the conference victory. Dubuque and Hunter paired up for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles before Hunter won 6-0, 6-0 against Nick Rohr at the top line of singles. Dubuque's singles win came against Sam Sheats at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Ryan Macy and
Alec Strause also captured a shutout win at No. 1 doubles and Baron teamed with his brother
James Baron for an 8-1 win at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep. He then would take down Keawe Shepherd Jones 6-2, 6-3 for his second win of the day.
In singles action against the Seahawks,
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen earned his first career victory when he appeared at No. 3 singles to defeat Kier Nacua (6-0, 6-0).
Dawson Driscoll and
Luke Fernandez rounded out the scoring with clean wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
After cruising to their first C2C win of the season, the Captains then turned their attentio back to a non-conference opponent with Averett toeing the line across the net. The result was 8-1 in favor of the home team with several hard-fought matches on the day.
In doubles, the Cougars gave the Captains a tough battle, but ultimately CNU entered singles play with another 3-0 lead. Macy and Strause won 8-5, Dubuque and Hunter added an 8-4 win, and the Baron brothers earned an 8-2 victory for the sweep.
Dubuque and Hunter made it four wins on the day for the Captains while James joined his brother Paul with a three-victory performance.
Ryan Macy also made a singles appearance, garnered the victory, and finished Saturday with three wins added to his record.
Hunter slipped by Jorge Figueroa for a tough win at No. 1, beating the Cougars top player by a final score of 6-4, 7-6 (4). Dubuque slid down to No. 5 for the second match and made quick work of Thomas Woodcock (6-1, 6-2).
James Baron's third win of the day also came in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) as he appeared on the second line, while rookie
Tyler Hyun added his first career win at No. 6 (6-1, 6-2).
The remaining two matches in singles play each went to a third set tiebreaker with the teams splitting the pair. At No. 3, Strause suffered a 0-6, 7-5, 10-6 loss to Stan Martherus, but the Captains completed the 8-1 win with Macy's three-set victory at No. 4 (6-3, 6-7 (6), 10-7).
In total, ten different players appeared in the two matches for Christopher Newport.
The Captains will return to action on Friday, March 19 kicking off a tough weekend with two matches against regional rivals. At 2:00 p.m. on Friday, CNU will host North Carolina Wesleyan College before traveling to Washington & Lee University on Sunday, also at 2:00 p.m.
