NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team made quick work of their opponents on Saturday as they took down St. Mary's College of Maryland, 9-0, and toppled Sweet Briar, 8-1 in a pair of matches at the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts. The Captains improved to 2-1 overall and picked up their first Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference victory with the win over St. Mary's.
Reagan Delp and
Kara Ferner led the way for the Captains, sweeping their matches for a team-best four victories. Rookie
Kiersten Chang grabbed three wins as well for Christopher Newport, including her first career singles victory.
Chang wasn't the only newcomer to score their first career win on Saturday as freshmen teammates
Karina Crivtonencu and
Logan Glen also came through with their first collegiate victories. The trio was preceded by
Tessa Trate, who captured her first win on Friday and followed up that performance with another singles victory on Saturday.
In the first match of the day, the Captains were superlative, surrendering just a single game in doubles action and only six combined in the six individual bouts. Delp and Ferner kickstarted their tremendous performance on the day with an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles. The veteran duo would then play No. 1 and No. 2 singles against the Seahawks and captured straight set wins; Delp downed Hallie Hershey at the top line (6-1, 6-0) and Ferner handled Hannah Gorel at number two (6-0, 6-1).
Trate and
Amanda Yermal paired for the doubles win at No. 1 against St. Mary's, capturing an 8-1 win, and rounding out the pairs sweep was
Megan Bauer and Chang together for an 8-0 win at No. 3.
In singles,
Lucy Davis and
Kendra Womack represented the second-year CNU players with wins at 3 and 4 while
Ana Clara Borga cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bella Sterner at No. 5. Finally,
Logan Glen was able to celebrate following her first career appearance with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Ellie Walter.
After the shutout in the morning, the Captains turned to the Vixens of Sweet Briar for the afternoon matchup. The visitors picked up a doubles point with a narrow win at No. 1, but Christopher Newport dominated the second and third lines with 8-2 and 8-0 wins, respectively. Delp and Ferner were in control again at No. 2 while Chang and Bauer stayed unbeaten on the season with an 8-0 win at No. 3.
Delp rounded out her 4-0 day by outlasting Ruth de Souza at No. 1 singles (6-4, 2-6, 10-7) and Ferner slid down to No. 3 for a win over Kate Kotany (6-1, 6-2). Trate was sandwiched by the upperclassmen with her win at No. 2 over Allison Wandling (6-3, 6-3).
The bottom three lines all went to young players for CNU as Chang won over Isabela Guilarte (6-1, 6-3),
Karina Crivtonencu defeated Alexia Alfaro (6-1, 6-0), and
Lucy Davis shut out Emily Wrenn (6-0, 6-0).
After a successful 2-1 start to the season, the Captains will now host North Carolina Wesleyan College on Friday, March 19 for their next match. The head-to-head battle is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
