NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University overcame an early 13-1 deficit to defeat Shenandoah University Tuesday night, 98-86. The men's basketball exhibition game was played at Wilkins Athletics and Events Center in Winchester, and marked the first action of the season for the Captains.
Following the slow start,
John Krikorian's squad surged ahead, 28-27, on a three-pointer from senior
Jason Aigner with 6:33 to play in the opening half and never would trail again. The Captains managed to build the lead to five at the half, 49-44, and then powered to a lead of 21 points in the second stanza before the Hornets were able to cut the final margin to a dozen.
Freshman
Jahn Hines came off the bench to post a double-double for the Captains, scoring 25 points and pulling down ten rebounds in just 21 minutes of action. Aigner finished with 24 points and was 7-for-12 from the field, shooting all of his attempts from three-point range. Freshman
Landon Hawes recorded 17 points and posted seven rebounds for the Captains.
Shenandoah had four player reach double figures, led by 25 points from Jaylen Williams.
Christopher Newport is scheduled to play next on Friday at Southern Virginia University, and then the Knights are set to travel to play the Captains at the Freeman Center on Saturday.
