Hawes Scores 33 to Lead Captains over Shenandoah, 89-85, in Exhibition Play

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Freshman Landon Hawes made 12 of his 15 shots Sunday, including four three-pointers, to score 33 points in an 89-85 exhibition victory at Shenandoah University. The Captains recorded their second win in Winchester in this abbreviated exhibition schedule.

John Krikorian's squad trailed at halftime, 45-37, after the Hornets led almost the entire opening half...taking the lead to as many as nine three different times. Christopher Newport rallied after the intermission, and surged ahead by as many as 11, 86-75, with just over two minutes to play en route to the four-point victory.

The Captains shot a dismal 37 percent in the opening half (13 of 35) and then scorched the nets in the second half, making 21 of 34 shots (62 percent).

Hawes erupted for 21 of his 33 points in the second half, and got the half started with two three-pointers in the opening minute. He registered 13 of his points in the first seven minutes of the second half, propelling the Captains into the lead. Three other Captains joined Hawes in double figures: senior Jason Aigner (17), sophomore Nick Thomas (11), and freshman Jahn Hines (11).

Matthew Anderson led Shenandoah with 23 points. The Captains scored 25 of their points off 19 Hornet turnovers.

The Captains continue their exhibition schedule on Saturday at Marymount. Tipoff time is set for 4:00 p.m.
