NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Despite a balanced attack that saw five different Captains reach double figures in scoring, the Captains lost a thriller at Marymount on Saturday in exhibition action, 87-85.
A layup from the Saints Montell Cooper in the final seconds gave Marymount the victory in the back-and-forth battle. Captains freshman
Landon Hawes had tied the game at 85-85 with a bucket with just eight seconds remaining before the late-game heroics by Cooper lifting the Saints to victory.
Marymount held a 42-39 advantage at halftime in the game that saw the lead change hands six times. The Saints had built a 10-point lead in the second half prior to a Captains comeback.
Junior
Tyler Trimble led the Captains off the bench with 19 points in just 12 minutes of playing time. Hawes and fellow freshman
Jahn Hines added 16 each, and Hawes recorded a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds to go with his 16 points. Freshman
Jamaal Madison (15) and senior
Jason Aigner (10) also reached double digits in scoring.
Xavier Reaves scored a game-high 32 points for Marymount, making 14 of 25 shots, and also contributed a dozen rebounds.
