Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing its season opener two days later than originally anticipated, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team made certain it was worth the wait as the Captains cruised to a 7-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday evening.
Playing at the James River Country Club indoor courts, the Captains won two doubles and five singles matches in the opener to pick up the win in the program's first match since March 6 of last year. Last season was cut short due to the COVID-19 global pandemic and Sunday's bout was the first match for the Captains in nearly a year.
Scotty Hunter,
James Baron, and
Matthew Dubuque each picked up multiple victories on the day for the Captains including a dominating showing by the sophomore Dubuque at No. 2 doubles and No. 6 singles. Dubuque paired with Hunter at No. 2 doubles as the duo surrendered just a single game in an 8-1 victory and then went on to dispatch of his opponent in singles by a final score of 6-2, 6-0.
Hunter also captured his singles win on the top line, 6-2, 6-2, against Felix Beuc, and
James Baron won his two matches at No. 3 doubles and singles. Baron teamed with his brother
Paul Baron for an 8-3 win in doubles and then secured a 6-3, 7-5 victory at 3 singles.
Other winners on the day for Christopher Newport were
Ryan Macy (6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles) and
Mason Kolls (6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles).
The Captains will return to action on March 6 at Southern Virginia University. Match time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Buena Vista, Va.
