NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Freshman
Landon Hawes led the way Wednesday night, recording 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, as Christopher Newport battled from behind to beat Marymount, 84-75. The Captains overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half and didn't lead in the game until pulling in front, 61-60, with 7:17 to play. Hawes was joined in double digits by seniors
Jason Aigner (18) and
Adrian Beasley (13) as well as sophomore
Devon Parrish (12).Â
Marymount jumped to an early 8-0 lead and went up by as many as 13 in the opening half. The Captains trailed at the intermission, 44-32, and then fell behind by as many as 15, 58-43, before mounting the comeback. Christopher Newport used an 18-2 run to grab the lead for the first time, and overall outscored the Saints, 52-31, in the second stanza.
Hawes made eight of 16 shots for the night, including two three-pointers. The Captains were held to 34 percent shooting in the opening half, but improved to 49 percent after halftime and ended up 28 of 68 (41 percent) for the game. CNU also connected on 11 of 26 (42 percent) shots from beyond the arc in the nine-point triumph.
Parrish and Beasley both caught fire in the second half to spur the comeback. Parrish drained three long-range jumpers and scored ten of his 12 points down the stretch. He also dished out five assists and posted four rebounds. Beasley recorded 11 of his 13 points in the second half, and also pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman
Jahn Hines, who suffered foul trouble in a scoreless opening half, scored all eight of his points in the second half and also contributed six rebounds.Â
Freshman Montell Cooper (18) and senior Steve Etienne (16) led the Saints, who blocked ten Captains shots. Cooper and Etienne each registered four blocks.
The squads will meet again in exhibition action in Arlington, Va., on March 6th.
