NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport dropped an 84-58 decision at Virginia Wesleyan Friday in a men's basketball exhibition game at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach. The Captains held an 11-10 lead at the 13:55 mark of the opening half before the Marlins ran away, thanks to a 38-9 burst over the remainder of the half. After trailing at the intermission, 48-20, the Captains out-scored the Marlins in the second half, 38-36.
Freshman
Jahn Hines led the way for Christopher Newport with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Senior
Jason Aigner also reached double figures with ten points. The Captains out-rebounded the Marlins, 36-35, led by Hines' 11 and fellow freshman
Landon Hawes, who pulled down five boards. Virginia Wesleyan was led by Lamont Steward's 18 points and ten rebounds.Â
Christopher Newport struggled with its shooting, making just 20 of 69 shots for the night (.290). The Captains also made just two of 17 (.118) from beyond the arc.
The Captains play another exhibition game at home this Wednesday against Marymount. Tipoff time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
